To explore the Library of Birmingham in Second Life, you will need to register with Second Life and download the software that you need. Follow the 4 steps below to create your account and get started with Second Life. We recommend that you read through all 4 stages before creating your account.

Step 1 - Create your account

First, you need to create your Second Life account.. After clicking on the link click the Join Now button top right of the new web page and follow the instructions to choose your avatar and enter your details. .


Step 2 - Email Confirmation

When you have created your account you will receive an email from Second Life Account registration. This is to confirm your email address. Click on the link in the email to return to registration area. This will complete your registration and you will have a Second Life account!


Step 3 - Install software

Once you have confirmed your email address you will be asked to click on a button to install the Second Life software. You may also need to install Apple Quicktime if you do not already have it installed.

  • The Second Life client. If you need to install it manually you can download this here, it should take no more than 5 - 10 minutes.
  • Apple Quicktime media player. If you need to install it manually you can download this here, it should take no more than 10 minutes.

Step 4 - Orientation

You're nearly up and running! Second Life should start automatically, if not you can launch it from the Second Life software icon on your desktop. Click on the icon to open it and enter your Second Life name and password in the space provided. The first time you enter Second Life you will be asked to read and accept the Second Life terms of service.

You will then be in Second Life! You will arrive in our Orientation Area and here you will learn the basic skills you need to use Second Life. At the end of the Orientation Area you can teleport to the Virtual Library of Birmingham and start exploring!
